This was the first I've heard of this but apparently SAG-AFTRA would like cosplayers not to dress up as characters from Live Action media

Even before the strike half the big companies werent doing big panels there anyway, relying on some actor promotion, their owned conventions and events, and [caps] FANS. [/caps] fans creating disruption as well to help the workers would be very visible as well.
and if it's for months and several conventions, and creators pivot their content away for long periods of time, it'll really make their pockets hurt bc they [caps] BARELY [/caps] pay for owned marketing anymore and again, rely on fans. [caps] DRAIN THEM DRY. [/caps]

We are asking folks not to do cosplay if it would promote struck productions. Yes, you can promote comics, books, and games, as this is not struck work. That being said, performers are being asked to refrain from promoting struck work, including past productions that would have been struck if produced today. [End ID]

Am I allowed to promote struck work on social media as a fan and not in a paid capacity?
Influencers should refrain from posting on social media about any struck work regardless of whether they are posting organically or in a paid capacity.
Can I attend conventions as a fan as long as I am not being paid to promote anything?
You cannot participate in conventions such as Comic-Con on behalf of, or to promote, companies we are striking against- this includes appearances, panels, fan meet and greets, etc. involving struck work. You may participate in a convention in ways that are wholly independent of characters from struck work or sponsorship by struck companies. If you have any questions relating to this distinction, please contact SAGAFTRAstrike@sagaftra.org. [end ID]
y'all know she's literally @elphabaforpresidentofgallifrey right
yes hi these are my tweets!
a few things to note:
- IT IS NOT JUST LIVE ACTION MEDIA. Animated media is written and animated by members of TAG (The Animation Guild) normally in the US (which is a part of IATSE) but most of the voice acting is done by SAG members. animated US-produced work is ALSO involved here.
- The guidelines for what influencers and fans should do are sort of unclear, and the FAQs on the SAG website that the screenshot is of have come after people like Kari (estarguarstia) and many others have asked several clarifying questions. The site is helpful and clear on some stuff, but there's still some ambiguity, simply because the line between content creator/influencer/fan/fanwork is basically nonexistent. If you're in the union, there's very specific guidelines - do NOT take brand deals and shit like that. If you're Not in the union but want to be maybe in the future, same deal. But if you're neither or unsure, or maybe just a fan but realize shit, everything I post online about my blorbos whether it is fanart or cosplay I do at SDCC is considered FREE REAL ESTATE MARKETING for these companies, what counts, it's kind of up in the air. There's no hard and fast rules for you, but if you wanna act in solidarity, personally I'd say just only do fanwork either privately (share amongst friends, in discords, etc) for struck work, or pivot to only talking about other things you like online/in public for now. (See a cool meme about a movie coming out? Share it with your friend in DMs rather than reblogging/retweeting, save your fics to post later, some shit). These are just suggestions from me personally, because I have literally WORKED at these companies developing fandoms for profit.
- Media/journalists and critics are still encouraged to keep reviewing. There's a pledge and disclaimer people are being asked to use when talking about struck work, but that's it. This can get complicated because many video creators and podcasters are also independent critics and entertainment journalists, which is why people are figuring it out on their own, but if you see a publication continue as usual, know that this is allowed.
- Once again - the unions do NOT WANT YOU TO BOYCOTT MOVIES AND SHOWS. Please do NOT cancel your streaming services, PLEASE keep seeing movies in theaters. Talk about new and old movies and shows that SAG and the WGA have worked on with your friends, recommend them in group chats and discords and with coworkers and family, etc. Obviously this kind of creates a problem where without the free fan marketing all of us do online, a show might suffer - but that's exactly what the companies have created, because they have DUPED us into thinking it is OUR JOB to do free work to promote their shows, when they should be marketing their shows correctly and accurately (Like hiring people like me. I lost my job last year from a studio in pre-strike anticipation layoffs. I really say all of this from personal experience).
Right now, a lot of creators are still trying to figure all this out, and you're not a bad person for doing one or the other thing, but I do urge people to think about it because especially at an event like a big con, YOU ARE THE PRODUCT. (much like how your posts on a social media platform comprise of the product that company sells to advertisers!) Cosplay especially, even if you're doing it as a hobby, even if you don't post any pictures of yourself, other people are gonna take pictures of you, and the con has permission to do it just by you buying a ticket. You're doing free marketing whether you like it or not. (Assigned Influencer At Logged On).
there's plenty of other great stuff to cosplay, make fanart and fic and memes and jokes about that they've said is ok - books, comics, games, fiction and TTRPG podcasts (unless they're WGA or SAG productions), your favorite youtubers/streamers (although they may be influencers in the union too they may have different contracts not with studios, it can depend), music, any non-US produced TV film like anime, kdramas, British TV, etc. (yes, doctor who is about to dominate everywhere bc it is not struck work lol).
if you want to help the striking workers and their colleagues being affected in a more direct way, here is the list of all the different funds you can contribute to:
- Subject your Followers to your favorite Stupid Bullshit.
Hey! I’m gonna assume you guys like using Tumblr correct? What about AO3? TikTok? Or any other platform that fandom spaces thrive? Then you need to give a fuck about the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA).
KOSA is a act currently being talked about in congress that is labeled as a act that prevents minors from seeing 18+ content. It being labeled as that seems okay and good, yes, but that’s not what this bill is about.
KOSA, if put in place, will make so the attorney general of each state gets to pick which platforms will be banned in their state. And this doesn’t been censorship of minors, this means censorship of everyone of ALL AGES.
“My attorney general wouldn’t ban this sites.” Yes, they might not. But don’t think about yourself right now. MILLIONS of people will be without spaces to escape too. Millions of people will be without access to websites that allows them to talk to people. Millions of queer people wouldn’t be allowed on to places they were originally welcomed.
“Okay? But they’re only trying to ban nsfw content?” And what do all republications see as nsfw? Queer people. Especially trans people.
KOSA is just another bill that will allow nation wide bans on topics such as sex, gender, sexuality, and more. This act does nothing more except erase queer people from online spaces, and further pushes the anti-trans beliefs (and genocide) circling our country right now.
Y’all need to give a shit about this bill like you should still be giving a shit about the RESTRICT ACT (which still hasn’t been turned down yet btw).
This act opens the door from any site such of tumblr and quotev to be banned, to YouTube if your AG doesn’t like it for ANY reason. And don’t forget, VPN’s can only do so much, and the government already wants to ban those.
What can you do? CALL YOUR FUCKING CONGRESS REPS. EMAIL THEM. I don’t give a shit, all I care about is this bill that doesn’t speak for the people getting blocked and not being put in place. Bills like this further push our nations descent into facism. And if there’s a way to prevent that, we better fucking do it.
i dont like to reblog anything that really stresses me out but um since I have no fucking clue how else to help (email reps?? call them?? the fuck am I supposed to say though???) so I guess ill just reblog this
